An assessment was carried out at the site of a proposed development at The Mall, Drogheda, Co. Louth. This development is currently in the pre-planning stage. The site is located within the zone of archaeological potential for Drogheda town and is within the perimeter of the medieval walled town. The site itself is thought to be located on the site of the former Franciscan Friary, constructed in the 13th and demolished in the 17th century.
An assessment by means of test-trenching was conducted on the site over a number of days in March 2008. The trenches were excavated at locations proposed for ground disturbance. A number of archaeological features were exposed during the course of the assessment including three medieval stone walls, a cobbled surface and a number of medieval deposits containing human remains. The features are considered to represent parts of the church of the Franciscan friary and associated burials.
