Testing of a grassy area adjacent to St Mary’s Parish Church, James’ Street, Drogheda, revealed post-medieval overburden deposits 2.2m deep directly overlying natural subsoil. Along Corry’s Hill, a laneway that formed the eastern site boundary, the remains of 19th/20th-century housing were encountered for a distance of 6m from the site boundary. The boundary wall is actually the remains of the front wall of those properties. The floor levels of these houses were encountered at c. 1.2m below ground level and were built into post-medieval garden soils. No medieval artefacts or features were recorded within the test-trenches. The area has been significantly altered in the modern era and in situ archaeological remains are unlikely to survive.
