Pre-development testing was carried out on 22 April and 1 May 2008 of a proposed development site at Tholsel Street, Carlingford, Co. Louth. The development consisted of an extension to a house. The development area was located on Tholsel Street between O’Hare’s pub and the ‘Tholsel’ (LH005–042009).
Four trenches, measuring a total of 26m in length, were placed across the areas of the site due to be disturbed. Trenching revealed that the development area was reclaimed and backfilled sometime in the17th to mid-19th century when the old harbour quay was built. Medieval deposits were uncovered at a depth between 1.3–1.7m and point to the location of the medieval shoreline and possibly the position of an earlier quay. No impacts were predicted on potential medieval levels and this was subsequently confirmed during monitoring of construction works.
