Monitoring was carried out of the groundworks associated with the flood-relief works at Abbeylara, Co. Longford, from May to September 2008 on behalf of the Office of Public Works and Longford County Council. Due to the scheme’s proximity to LF011–036 (Cistercian abbey), it was necessary to obtain ministerial consent for the works carried out within the immediate area of the monument (E3930). As part of the application process for the Consent, a watercourse and metal-detector survey (08R165) of the Abbeylara stream was also carried out.
The Abbeylara flood-relief works consisted of the regrading of the existing stream, which flows north–west/south–east through the village. No finds or features of archaeological significance were revealed during the course of the watercourse survey or the monitoring scheme.
