Kilkenny County Council requested an impact assessment at Ennisnag, Co. Kilkenny, as further information in advance of a decision on a planning application for a single residential development. The site was partially within the area of constraint for KK027–018, the site of Ennisnag Castle, which was marked on the Down Survey map and was the seat of Dr John Horsfall, Protestant Bishop of Ossory (1586–1609). The foundations of the castle were present in the early 19th century and are marked on the first-edition OS map. No trace of it survives today. Testing 50m south-east of the castle site failed to uncover anything of archaeological significance within the cuttings opened.
