Centreline trenching (CRDS 2006) identified a pit on a gentle south-facing slope in open terrain at the western edge of the CPO. The pit was 0.65m in diameter and 0.28m deep. Four fragments of iron slag were recovered during testing. Excavation added nothing more to the understanding of the pit and no further slag was recovered.
At the time of excavation the field adjacent to the CPO had been ploughed and an area of dark soil was noted about 1.5m to the north-west of the pit. The colour of this spread is substantially darker than the fill of the pit, which may suggest a function associated with intense heat, possibly a furnace. No finds were recovered from the field surface.
