Testing was undertaken at the site of a proposed residential development at Carlowgate, Castledermot. The site lies on the western side of the street and the rear boundary is formed by the line of the medieval town wall. A buffer area of 15m was established from the wall line, following which a total of eleven test-trenches were mechanically excavated. No subsurface features of archaeological interest were uncovered, although there was some evidence of truncation to the surface of the underlying subsoil. Such disturbance was caused by the laying of modern pipes, a soakage pit and the removal of large stones, the latter presumably associated with the use of the area as a vegetable plot. A total of 29 sherds of pottery were recovered, the majority of which are of medieval date.
