Testing was undertaken at this site in advance of the proposed extension to McKenna’s Hardware store on the Ballybunion Road in Listowel. The proposed extension is located to the south and west of Listowel Workhouse graveyard, called Teampaillín Bán (The Little White Churchyard). A total of thirteen trenches were opened across the area of the proposed development. The trenches varied between 40m and 80m in length. In the northern half of the site a considerable depth of redeposited topsoil and natural material (averaging 0.3m) had been levelled out across the site. This appears to be associated with modern construction in the adjacent industrial park. A series of drainage systems were uncovered across the site. Flecks of cremated animal bone were present in the topsoil but no in situ archaeological remains were uncovered.
