An impact assessment was undertaken following a request for further information by Kerry County Council, for a proposed development site at Upper Church Street, Listowel, Co. Kerry. The developers propose to construct a mixed-use development of retail and residential dwellings.
A 1.5-tonne machine incrementally excavated the topsoil under supervision. Four trenches were opened across the site. Modern disturbance and infill, with a maximum and minimum depth of 0.7m and 0.4m respectively, were recorded in Trench 1 on the eastern side of the building but did not extend into Trench 2 which was situated to the east of Trench 1. Frequent modern inclusions of glass, modern pottery, rusted nails and animal bone were recorded within this infill. Trenches 3 and 4 were located on the southern side of the building. The topsoil in Trenches 2, 3 and 4 was a mid-brown silty clay with moderate inclusions of modern pottery, rusted nails and glass. The subsoil in all trenches was a mottled white/grey/yellow silty clay with moderate inclusions of small sub-angular stones.
No archaeological deposits or artefacts were recorded within site.
