Pre-development testing was undertaken at the proposed development site at The Malton (formerly Great Southern) Hotel, Killarney, Co. Kerry. The one recorded site within the proposed development area is a pit (KE066–115), of unknown date, identified by Avril Purcell (Sheila Lane & Associates) during monitoring of service trenches in August 2002 (Excavations 2002, No. 806, 02E0189). The site also lies within the zone of archaeological potential for a holy well (KE066–071).
Five test-trenches were excavated across the site. An area of 10m2 was excavated around what was previously thought to be a pit, KE066–115. This feature was identified as a linear feature, north-east/south-west in orientation. No other features of finds of archaeological interest were exposed within the test-trenches.
