An application was made for ministerial consent in respect of widening a secondary road junction adjacent to a national monument, KE042–068, a cashel, clochans and souterrain. The works involved decreasing the height of the roadside boundary on the north side of the monument so as to provide greater sight-distance at a junction on a dangerous section of road. The works were carried out on 9 June 2008 and were fully monitored.
The existing roadside boundary was constructed mainly of topsoil with some stone and this boundary was decreased in height from 1.35m to 0.3m. No excavation penetrated beneath this level and all works were carried out within the matrix of the road boundary. No archaeological material was recorded. The material removed from the roadside boundary was mounded inside the line of the existing boundary and it is proposed to augment this topsoil with further imported topsoil to form a new field boundary with the road. No excavation will take place within this area and the 0.3m height of the altered boundary will also be retained.
