Testing was undertaken on the proposed site of a wind farm development at Barna, Scartaglin, Co. Kerry. No archaeological features were identified in any of the test-trenches excavated. The marginal and exposed nature of the land may have had limited potential for agriculture or settlement in the past.
Some charcoal flecking was noted at the base of the peat around Turbine 11. This could be the result of natural in situ burning of vegetation or it could have been windborne from a considerable distance away. There is a possibility, however, that it might indicate human activity in the vicinity of this turbine location. This activity could have included deliberate tree clearance or domestic activity and its depth in the peat suggested some antiquity.
