Phase 2 excavations along the 27.2km of the N18 Oranmore to Gort (Glenbrack to Rathmorrissey) National Road Scheme were commissioned by Galway County Council and the National Roads Authority.
The area stripped of topsoil measured c. 400m2. A shallow spread of burnt material measuring 6.34m in length, 5.98m in width and 0.19m in maximum depth occupied a central position on the summit of a low rise. Removal of this burnt spread revealed one large and two smaller pits. The larger pit was subrectangular in plan and was orientated east to west. It measured 2.45m in length, 1.45m in width and was 0.33m in depth. Three stake-holes were driven in the upper sides of the pit. Two further stake-holes were located 0.4m west of the pit. Two smaller pits were located c. 2.5m north-east of the large pit. The largest of these was oval in plan and measured 0.78m in length, 0.52m in width and 0.47m in depth. The final two pits were located c. 5.5m south-east of main pit. Both of these pits had associated stake-holes.
Two further pits were located beyond the main spread. Six stake-holes cut the base of the one of the pits.
