Phase 2 excavations along the 27.2km of the N18 Oranmore to Gort (Glenbrack to Rathmorrissey) National Road Scheme were commissioned by Galway County Council and the National Roads Authority.
The area stripped of topsoil measured c. 400m2. A shallow burnt spread and two pits were recorded in the area of excavation. The spread comprised burnt material and heat-shattered limestone and measured 0.54m in length, 0.46m in width, and 0.12m in depth.
The larger pit was subrectangular in plan and was located to the south-east of the burnt spread. It measured 4.52m in length by 3.36m in width and was 0.85m in depth. Three stake-holes were recorded driven into the base of the pit. The smaller pit was located 3.5m to the south and measured 1.6m in length, 1.54m in width and 0.25m in depth.
