Testing took place on 17 July 2008 at Kilkieran, Connemara. The area has several monuments of an ecclesiastical nature associated with St CiarĂ¡n. The site was subdivided into several fields with a relatively large open area in the north and smaller enclosures to the south. All fields were enclosed by drystone walls and cut by various natural and enhanced drains. The topography was very uneven and test-trenches had often to be negotiated through limestone outcrop and large glacial erratic boulders. The stratigraphy largely consisted of peat or peaty topsoil between rock outcrop and boulders overlying bedrock. Five test-trenches were excavated but nothing of archaeological significance was found.
