An underwater assessment was carried out at the site of a proposed pipeline crossing of the Ahnacoortia River at Headford, Co. Galway. The work was undertaken in February 2008 on behalf of Bord Gáis Networks. Headford Castle, GA042–021, was located adjacent to the development and the area had been the site of human occupation for a considerable time.
The underwater survey recorded that the construction of a modern bridge footing and the dredging of the river has greatly compromised the archaeological integrity of the site. There were no archaeological materials, deposits or features noted in this stretch of the river and the likelihood of the project impacting on such material was judged to be very low on account of the former activity having taken place there.
Based on the results of the assessment, it appeared that this area has been severely compromised as a result the likelihood of impacting on previously unrecorded archaeological material, features or deposits in this area was low.
