2008:557 - GORT: Crowe Street, Galway

Targeted testing took place at the site of a proposed development at Gort, Co. Galway, on 6 August 2008. The site is located within the area of constraint surrounding GA122–099 (church, site of). Testing was designed to find out if a number of previously reported geophysical anomalies had an archaeological origin. Four trenches were excavated across the site. A band of gley found in Trench 1 and a modern ditch in Trench 4 may have been responsible for some of the anomalies identified through geophysics. A plank, which though non-archaeological was certainly old and hand-worked, was found on the surface of Trench 4. The results of testing did not show an archaeological origin for the geophysical anomalies.
