An assessment including test-trenching was undertaken at a proposed development site for the construction of single dormer dwelling and associated works to the south-west of Ballinasloe. The proposed development is located adjacent to an area of archaeological constraint established around GA087–072, a children’s burial-ground. The proposed development involves the demolition of a farmhouse and the construction of a dormer dwelling, septic tank and new entrance off the existing N6.
Excavations across the site of the proposed dwelling were undertaken on 23 September 2008. Conditions at the time of the excavations were dry and bright. Four trenches were excavated by a tracked machine fitted with a toothless bucket. The four trenches were located with consideration for the footprint of the proposed development. Testing did not reveal any features relating to the children’s burial-ground located to the west of the proposed development. The testing did not reveal any other archaeological deposits, features or finds.
