Six trial-trenches were excavated through an existing carpark in the grounds of the National University of Ireland Galway on 15 and 16 July 2008. The site is located to the north of the Millennium Arts Building and the proposed development involves the construction of an extension to that building. The development site is in the vicinity of the site of St James’ Chapel, thought to date to the early 16th century. Trial-trenching revealed that the construction of the carpark had removed all original soils to natural boulder clay and no finds or features of archaeological significance were discovered.
