Testing was carried out at Dangan Lower, Galway, in July 2008. The proposed development involves the construction of a park and ride facility located within the grounds of NUIG campus, Galway. The proposed carpark is accessed from the N59 Galway to Moycullen road and lies to the south-west of the River Corrib, north-west of Corrib village (student accommodation) and south-east of the IDA grounds. The site is currently used as football pitches and the proposed carpark will occupy the southern part of the pitches. The subject area is in close proximity to a number of monuments, including GA082–035, classified as an icehouse, and GA082–034 and GA082–071, ringforts.
This proposed testing regime was designed to target areas identified in a geophysical report (07R191) carried out in October 2007. The geophysical assessment had detected areas of magnetic disturbance with evidence for linear and curvilinear anomalies. Testing took place over a two-day period and no finds or features of archaeological significance were exposed. According to the groundskeeper the area had been completely remodelled in the last twenty years. What was originally a large field with gently rolling hummocks and hills was landscaped to level the area for the playing pitches. This was evidenced in the large amount of redeposited material dumped across the site.
