Phase 2 excavations along the 27.2km of the N18 Oranmore to Gort (Glenbrack to Rathmorrissey) National Road Scheme were commissioned by Galway County Council and the National Roads Authority.
The site is located in an area of rough grazing to the south-east of a low hill, where the ground slopes towards the east along the margins of a large turlough. The area stripped of topsoil measured c. 855m2. In total six troughs were excavated. The size of the troughs ranged from 3.6m by 1.22m by 0.55m in depth to 1.3m by 1.2m and 0.4m in depth. The troughs also varied in shape from rectangular to circular. A stockpile of raw material stones was located between three of the troughs.
