Phase 2 excavations along the 27.2km of the N18 Oranmore to Gort (Glenbrack to Rathmorrissey) National Road Scheme were commissioned by Galway County Council and the National Roads Authority.
An area measuring c. 144m2 was desodded by hand to reveal the extent of a backfilled well. A large amount of backfilled material up to 1m deep including stone and peat was excavated from the centre of the well. Below the stone and peat was a light greenish-grey sandy silt layer. The core of the well was defined by five large intact stones, all greater than 1m in size. A large quantity of rough unworked stone surrounded the well and may have been an enclosing wall. To the west of the well an area of small course rounded stones was exposed which was interpreted as a possible pathway.
