Testing was carried out in April 2008, as part of a pre-planning assessment of a proposed large-scale housing development on a 7.25-acre greenfield site. The site was located in Caherroyn townland, on the west bank of the Clarin River, c. 0.5km north-east of the medieval town of Athenry (GA084–001). A ringfort, GA084–034, was located c. 30m west of the site. The project surrounded an 18th-century manor house, Caherroyn House, the demesne wall of which formed part of the site boundary. Test-trenches were opened across the site, except in the densely wooded areas adjacent to the demesne walls. No finds, features or deposits of archaeological significance were uncovered during testing.
