Testing was carried out at the site of a proposed residential development at Gortcam, Bullaun, Co. Galway, on 1 February 2008. This followed a geophysical survey carried out by GeoArc Ltd in compliance with a Request for Further Information in relation to a planning application for a housing development. The geophysics found a zone of pit-type anomalies and two faint curvilinear anomalies which it was recommended should be tested. Three trenches were mechanically excavated but nothing of an archaeological nature was discovered. Several bands of shale and decayed bedrock were found in all three trenches. The reported geophysical anomalies were probably caused by these soil and geological variations.
