Monitoring of slit trenches was carried out along the Silver Strand road at Bearna, Knocknacarra and Derryloney townlands, Co. Galway, in September 2008. The work was undertaken as part of investigative works in advance of the Galway Main Drainage Scheme, Contract 3. The Galway Main Drainage Scheme entails the provision of new drainage infrastructure at various locations throughout Galway city and its immediate hinterland. This section of the scheme runs through the zones of archaeological potential for four sites including GA093–003001, 003002 and 003003, classified as a church, a graveyard and a ritual site. GA093–003015, a church site, is located to the north of the Silver Strand crossroads on the R336 in the vicinity of the existing RC Bearna parish church. Excavation of the different slit trenches was carried out along existing roadways on proposed route of the rising main. Groundworks exposed both infilled ground and natural layers overlying granite bedrock. Nothing of archaeological potential was noted during the course of the groundworks.
