Monitoring of slit trenches was carried out at Ballyloughane and surrounding areas near Galway city in September 2008 as part of investigative works in advance of the Galway Main Drainage Scheme, Contract 3. The Galway Main Drainage Scheme entails the provision of new drainage infrastructure at various locations throughout Galway city and its immediate hinterland.
Works involve connecting the existing properties to a new foul sewer network, constructing a submersible pumping station with rising main connection to the existing network and decommissioning and demolishing the existing toilet block and installing a new automatic public convenience. There are no zones of archaeological potential within the development area and excavation of the different slit trenches along the route produced nothing of archaeological significance.
