Pre-development testing was carried out at a proposed residential development and park area at Ballyburke, Co. Galway. An initial assessment of the area undertaken in October 2005 found two possible archaeological features, a large mound and a possible stone row. In addition to the testing a record of the stone walls throughout the site was undertaken.
Three trenches were manually excavated in the course of testing. Two trenches were excavated through the mound feature while the third was excavated along the line of the stone alignment. Testing of the mound found that it was not archaeological but a natural mound of rock outcrop. No finds were recovered from this mound and development of this area will not impact on any archaeological features. One trench excavated along the line of stone alignment found it consisted of 5 orthostats orientated roughly east–west. The uprights do not conform to the general orientation and dimensions of stone rows uncovered elsewhere in County Galway; however, they do represent a row of boulders forming a line of unknown date and are situated in a prominent location. It was recommended that the possible stone alignment be left undisturbed.
