Phase 2 archaeological excavations along the 27.2km of the N18 Oranmore to Gort (Glenbrack to Rathmorrissey) National Road Scheme were commissioned by Galway County Council and the National Roads Authority.
Three large pits and one burnt spread were excavated at Ballinillaun 2. The largest of these had an oval cut and measured 2.01m long by 1.6m wide and had a maximum depth of 0.61m. Although the fills of the pits contained charcoal, there was no indication of in situ burning.
