The Shanganagh Bray Main Drainage Scheme, Contract 1, involves the expansion and replacement of the existing treatment plant in order to improve the seawater quality of the Shankill area. Works will be ongoing for the next eighteen months. Part of the traffic management plan for the scheme involves the construction of a temporary haul road through greenfield areas in order to take the construction traffic away from the residential areas close by. Monitoring is taking place of the soil-stripping of the haul road and the expansion area beside the existing wastewater treatment plant at Shanganagh cliffs.
During the course of monitoring close to the Battery on 20 November, a stretch of wall was uncovered. All works ceased around the wall and the area was cordoned off. As the wall was not going to be removed, and the ground was not going to be lowered further, it was decided to clean off, record and then preserve the exposed wall in situ.
The wall was covered and surrounded by redeposited topsoil which contained modern rubbish mixed within its matrix, possibly a result of land clearance associated with the development of the housing estate a couple of decades previously. The haul road is only expected to be in position for the duration of the construction works, and will be removed and all land reinstated to its original state.
