Monitoring which was undertaken at Newlands Cross on the N7, South County Dublin, was carried out in association with the proposed upgrade of the N7 Newlands Cross junction.
Kildare County Council (on behalf of South Dublin County Council) propose to upgrade the Newlands Cross junction between the N7 (Naas Road) and Belgard/Fonthill Road (R113) to a separate junction, resulting in the creation of an overpass. The existing N7 will be built up over the current level of the Belgard/Fonthill Road. The upgrade works will extend south along the Belgard Road, north-west along the Fonthill Road and east-north-east and west-south-west along the N7.
As part of the upgrade works Kildare County Council requested that Bord Gáis divert the Dublin City Gas Pipeline and relocate the Belgard Road AGI (above ground installation) in advance of the road scheme. Bord Gáis propose to construct a 1.2km-long, 0.5m-diameter diversion of the Dublin City Gas Pipeline, which will be relocated from the outbound hard shoulder of the N7 into the proposed new road corridor to the south of the existing N7. Upon completion of the road improvement works the new route of the pipeline will be developed for use as a cycle lane along the newly widened N7.
The route of the Dublin City Pipeline diversion traverses predominantly greenfield areas. Sites DU021–0401 and DU021–0402 (gateway and date-stone) and DU021–016 (a medieval road) are in the vicinity. Monitoring of topsoil removal was carried out from 5 August to 12 September 2008. No features of archaeological significance were identified.
