It is proposed to undertake a mixed-use development on the southern section of the former Dún Laoghaire Golf Club. The lands are partially situated within the townlands of Honeypark and Monkstown North. There are no previously identified monuments of archaeological interest located within, or in the immediate environs of, the proposed development area.
A programme of testing involving the machine excavation of 21 trenches undertaken within the curtilage of the site did not uncover any subsurface features or artefacts of archaeological interest. Likewise, the monitoring of geotechnical trial pit investigations did not result in the discovery of anything of archaeological interest. The grant of planning requires that ‘all site development works’ be monitored. It is expected that such monitoring will commence in 2009 and it is likely that it will be undertaken on a phased basis.
