Test-trenching was undertaken at Kilmainham Congregational Church, Inchicore Road, Dublin 8, in order to assess the archaeological impact of a proposed residential conversion. Kilmainham Congregational Church is a protected structure comprising a large hall constructed c. 1812.
Three test-trenches were excavated on the site on 21 August 2008, two in the church hall and one outside to the south. No significant archaeological material or features were encountered, and the only deposits identified were associated with the construction of the church in the early 19th century.
No evidence was found for any remains associated with the 9th-century Scandinavian cemetery of Kilmainham/Islandbridge, situated along the gravel ridge between the Liffey and the Camac, in the general vicinity of the Congregational Church. A primary aim of the testing programme was to establish whether this archaeological complex extended on to the proposed development site and would be impacted upon by the development, and it appears that this is not the case.
