The proposed development is located just on the southern outskirts of Strangford village off the Shore Road. It entails the installation of a tidal turbine system within the lough and the construction of a hard standing area to facilitate large machinery and extension to an electricity substation, both of which will be located in a field adjacent to the lough.
There are two archaeological sites within a 1km radius, a post-medieval tower known as the Old Court on the western shore just north of Strangford village and a Mesolithic occupation site on a raised beach on the eastern shore across the lough. There are ten maritime sites recorded within the study area, the majority of which consist of 19th-century quays and slipways in and around Strangford village itself.
Monitoring was carried out on-site in March and May 2007. Nothing of archaeological interest was noted.
Editor’s note: Although excavated during 2007, the report on this site arrived too late for inclusion in the bulletin of that year.
