Archaeological evaluation of No. 2 Union Street, Donaghadee, took place in January 2008 in advance of the redevelopment of the site of the former Orange Hall and took the form of two test-trenches which ran north to south across the long axis of the site. The material removed down to undisturbed subsoil consisted of mixed building material and general occupation waste. This included 19th- and 20th-century pottery and glass as well as some plastic and miscellaneous ceramic building material fragments.
It was observed prior to testing that the site sloped gradually to the north. This slope was more apparent, as the test-trenches were taken down to subsoil level. The depth of the subsoil at the south end (uphill) of the site was 0.2m below ground surface whereas the depth at the north end was c. 1m below ground surface. This suggests that, prior to the construction of the Orange Hall in the early 20th century, the site was levelled using mixed building and waste occupation material as observed in the sections of the trenches.
No in situ archaeological deposits were uncovered.
