A hotel development site at Sheep Lane, Raphoe, Donegal, is situated directly opposite St Eunan’s Cathedral, within an urban zone of archaeological potential. There are sixteen monuments listed in the RMP within 1km of the development site.
The western area of the site was formerly occupied by Raphoe Hardware Store which was demolished between 2007 and 2008. Testing (June 2008) of the western area of the site revealed highly disturbed layers of deposit and redeposit that seemed to be associated with building construction and demolition through time. Artefacts including hand-blown glass wine bottle fragments, pottery sherds, red-brick fragments and ceramic tiles indicated 18th- and 19th-century activity. No features/deposits or finds of archaeological significance were discovered during the course of testing.
