A pre-disturbance underwater assessment took place of a 200m by 195m area of seabed and intertidal foreshore as part of the proposed pier extension and breakwater development at Rannagh Pier, Rossillion Bay, Arainn Mhór, Co. Donegal.
Systematic visual inspection of both the seabed and intertidal impact area was undertaken. In addition a metal-detection survey was carried out across the seabed impact area associated with the proposed breakwater construction. A buffer zone was incorporated into the archaeological survey, extending the survey up to 80m around the seabed/intertidal impact zones associated with the pier extension and breakwater development. The majority of the development footprint is located upon archaeologically sterile bedrock, located across the intertidal zone. Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed within the immediate survey area. However, a number of features were noted outside the boundaries of the proposed development and included a 19th-century field boundary system and possible kelp-drying wall.
The survey was carried out on 28 August 2008.
