Monitoring at Castlefarm, Mitchelstown, Co. Cork, took place on 10 and 11 November 2008 in advance of a proposed development. The area of the proposed development, comprising a truck-wash facility, lies within the zone of archaeological potential of a church (CO019–02702) and graveyard (CO019–
02701).
The monitored trench was 6.5m long, 2.5m wide and up to 2m deep. Once the concrete was removed the natural geology beneath was exposed. The bedrock sloped upwards within the trench from a depth of 1.8m in the northern part to 0.3m in the southern part. It is likely that this area had been disturbed by the surface preparations (e.g. soil compaction) for the laying of the concrete.
Nothing of archaeological significance was identified within the test-trench.
