Phase 2 excavation works were undertaken along the route of the N8 Fermoy–Mitchelstown bypass on behalf of Cork County Council. The proposed bypass involves the construction of c. 16km of dual carriageway extending from Gortore north of Fermoy to Carrigane north-east of Mitchelstown. A programme of advance archaeological testing (Phase 1) had been carried out in October 2005, the results of which appeared in Excavations 2005.
Excavations at Gortore 2 revealed a series of ditches, linear features and furrows. There were three furrows, five ditches and three linear features, possibly also ditches. Four of the linear features were aligned north to south, two were aligned north-west to south-east, and two were aligned north-east to south-west. The three furrows were probably the most recent features at the site; all three truncated one of the ditches. These features probably represent the remains of drainage features and field boundaries and they are probably late medieval or post-medieval in date.
