Monitoring of the removal of topsoil at a proposed wastewater treatment plant in Doneraile town was carried out over a number of days in April and May 2008. Topsoil depths were difficult to determine since previous work on the boggy site had compressed the topsoils into the orange/brown boulder clay subsoil. Topsoil directly overlaid clays on the eastern side of the site. The clays overlaid orange sands. In the centre of the site the topsoil overlaid mud deposits up to 0.3m thick. Topsoil overlaid boulder clays and muds in the northern part of the site, although sections along the northern edge of the site, closest to the river, were disturbed and boulder clays overlaid redeposited topsoils and muds. There were no finds or features of archaeological significance noted during the monitoring of the ground-reduction work on the site. A section of the wall along the western site boundary was removed to widen the site access. This was supervised. The stones from the wall will be retained and used to rebuild the new entrance in keeping with the existing wall.
