Pre-development testing was undertaken at White Street, Cork, on the south side of the south channel of the River Lee within the zone of archaeological potential for the city. The development involved the demolition of a disused motorcycle shop, showroom and offices and change of use to residential units along with associated siteworks. The new buildings were constructed on columns and the foundations for these were piled. The buildings that were present on the site during the initial inspection extended to the rear and sides of adjacent properties and these were demolished prior to the test excavation. Three test-trenches were placed across those areas of the development that were to be subjected to maximum ground disturbance and their excavation revealed a number of layers of modern infill material reaching a depth of over 1m. The layers contained fragments of concrete blocks, red brick, ceramic sewer pipe fragments and a range of domestic debris including glass and modern delft. All of the recovered material was 20th century in date and no traces of archaeological deposits were exposed.
