Monitoring of the dredging works associated with the XC241 Level Crossing Upgrade at Tivoli, Co. Cork, was undertaken on a twelve-hour basis between 7 and 26 October 2008. The dredging process was undertaken by backhoe dredger, operating from a jack-up platform moored to the adjacent quayside. Dredging was carried out across a 160m by 36m area of riverbed. The riverbed area under development was previously inspected by ADCO in August 2008 (see No. 215 above).
The removal of all riverbed material was monitored. These deposits were largely sterile in nature, with little man-made material being observed. The riverbed was primarily composed of a grey silty-clay deposit. Frequent modern dumped material was recovered from the upper layers of the dredged material. No archaeologically significant material, deposits, or structure were encountered during monitoring.
