Underwater survey took place of the development footprint for the in-water works associated with the XC241 Level Crossing Upgrade Works at Tivoli, Co. Cork. The railway crossing will be extended to encompass a road bridge, passing over Glanmire Road and into a section of the River Lee. This river intrusion is necessary to accommodate a road ramp and provide access to the new level extension.
A pre-disturbance underwater assessment of the proposed river impact area was originally undertaken by ADCO in January 2006, licence 05D108, 05R123. However, subsequent to the initial survey, the layout of the proposed development was re-designed and the site location was moved c. 80m downstream (east) of the original crossing centre-point. As such, a further pre-disturbance assessment of the riverbed was necessary prior to commencement of the proposed in-water development works.
The underwater assessment was undertaken on 24 August 2008. The survey was undertaken across the development footprint and included a significant buffer zone which extended the survey 20m upstream, 20m downstream, and 20m south of the proposed riverbed impact area. No archaeologically significant material, structures, or deposits were encountered as part of the survey.
