Further excavation was undertaken at the former Huguenot cemetery in Cork city centre, the majority of which is to be redeveloped as a garden of remembrance to Cork’s Huguenot community. The northern end of the site will be developed to accommodate a stairway to an adjoining building.
Excavation commenced during 2007 (Excavations 2007, No. 238) and a number of features were revealed, including a lead-lined coffin, in the area of the proposed stairway, and a second possible coffin, which was partially exposed in the garden of remembrance area. Both of these were retained in situ. The lower level of a probable burial crypt and a chest tomb were also revealed as well as a substantial horizontal headstone, which was found under an early 20th-century single-storey extension when it was demolished. Further hand excavation was carried out to the required formation level during 2008. No further structural remains were revealed. Additional ex situ human remains were recovered. All human remains recovered were analysed and the minimum number of individuals was determined at twelve adults and eleven juveniles represented in the whole assemblage. Various pathological conditions were identified on the remains, which proved to be quite informative for a disarticulate assemblage.
