Monitoring of the removal of topsoil at a wastewater treatment plant site to the east of Buttevant town was carried out intermittently over a number of days in early 2008. Topsoil depths averaged 0.3m over the total area of the site. The underlying subsoil was an orange/brown boulder clay with infrequent stones. The underlying shale limestone bedrock was exposed in places. Some fragments of post-medieval pottery were noted in the topsoil. The removal of a 3m-long section of wall along the northern site boundary was supervised. This wall is a continuation eastwards of the wall that stands at the south side of Buttevant Bridge (CO017–106) and postdates the bridge. The bridge is located 50m west of the proposed entrance to the site. The stones from the wall will be retained and used to rebuild the new entrance in keeping with the existing wall.
