Monitoring of groundworks associated with the Feakle, Scarriff and Quilty Sewerage Scheme for Clare County Council was conducted in the area around Tuamgraney and Scarriff between June and September 2008. The infrastructural works comprised water main and foul sewer pipes, which were laid along existing roads, tracks and across open greenfield areas from the village of Tuamgraney to Scarriff.
Monitoring of only a small portion of the works was undertaken due to failure of the client to notify the consultant archaeologist when some of the groundworks were being undertaken. Successfully monitored areas included two greenfield sites in Ballyminogue townland close to the Scarriff River and a tributary. Intermittent monitoring of pipelaying along road sections was also undertaken in Scarriff and Drewsborough. No features or finds of archaeological significance were encountered in any of the monitored locations.
Areas that were not monitored include a greenfield area north-east of Tuamgraney in Drewsborough townland as well as pipe-laying work running adjacent to the castle (CL028–058003), St Cronan’s church (CL028–058001), or the graveyard (CL028–058002) in Tuamgraney. The pipes were constructed under roads and where possible along the line of existing services. The culvert through which the River Croaghrum passes under the road was also reportedly encountered but not while works were being monitored.
