Test excavations were undertaken at a proposed development site at Rosslevan, Ennis, Co. Clare. Rosslevan is located just over 2km north-east of Ennis town centre, now forming part of the increasing urban expansion of Ennis and positioned just south of the R352 regional road from Ennis to Tulla. The area consists of sections of two fields, comprising 1.529 acres. It is intended to construct a retail development.
A track machine using a 1.8m-wide flat grading bucket excavated four trenches across the site. The topsoil was a mid-brown silty clay loam with a maximum depth of 0.2m, while the subsoil comprised a dark-orange/yellow silty clay. The underlying limestone bedrock was encountered in each of the four trenches excavated. This was particularly evident in Trenches 3 and 4, which were excavated across a pronounced ridge in the underlying bedrock.
No trenches were excavated in the eastern area of the site due to the presence of a dwelling house and outbuilding.
No archaeological remains were encountered during testing of the site.
