Excavation was carried out on 12–21 February 2008 along the route of the proposed N3 Butlersbridge to Belturbet road improvement scheme for Cavan County Council and the National Roads Authority. The excavation revealed what may have been an ancient lakeshore that now forms an area of slightly elevated ground located alongside an existing peat bog. It was apparent that the south-eastern edge of the site had been dramatically altered in recent history: a gate was placed in the hedgerow between the existing N3 and the field where the site was located. In order to allow access, the area around the gate was removed to bring the entrance level with the road. Several pits filled with heat-shattered stone and charcoal may have been related to burnt-mound activity.
