Excavation was carried out between 21 and 26 March 2008 along the route of the proposed N3 Butlerbridge to Belturbet road improvement scheme for Cavan County Council and the National Roads Authority. The excavation revealed the remains of a post-medieval/modern stone building, an adjacent metalled yard and a peat bog containing unworked timber. Wood specialist Ellen O’Carroll examined a number of large wood specimens that were uncovered within a shallow fen peat environment close to the mineral soil. These were identified as oak from an ancient forest that pre-dated the bog. Ms O’Carroll recommended that samples of the oak should be sent for dendrochronological dating.
