Monitoring of topsoil-stripping and subsequent excavation was undertaken at the site of a proposed housing development at Abbey Road, Tynan, Co. Armagh. Monitoring work was carried out on 10–13 December 2007, with subsequent excavation taking place over 21–25 January 2008.
Monitoring of topsoil-stripping revealed an area of archaeological activity located in the north-western corner of the site. Excavation revealed the remains of a subrectangular foundation trench enclosing an area c. 9m north-east/south-west by c. 8m, the foundation trench itself measuring c. 0.55m wide by c. 0.35m deep. It was primarily filled by dark-grey silty clay. Located with the foundation trench were several subsoil-cut pits, post-holes and gullies which were primarily clustered within the south-western corner. The foundation trench truncated a linear ditch-like feature along its northern limit that was aligned north-west/south-east and terminated at its south-eastern end. A field drain truncated the south-eastern side of the foundation trench.
No artefactual remains were recovered during excavation and a radiocarbon date is forthcoming for this activity, which appears to represent a small isolated rural dwelling.
