Research excavation was carried out in association with the Centre for Maritime Archaeology, University of Ulster, Coleraine. The cave is 80m to the west of Dunseverick Castle, and the purpose of the excavation was to investigate if there was any past human usage of the cave.
Continuation of the excavation of a trench (Trench 1) opened in 2007 (Excavations 2007, No. 46, AE/07/181) revealed stratigraphy of archaeological significance, containing Early Christian pottery. The area adjacent to, and to the east of, the upstanding wall within the cave was opened (Trench 5) to reveal the continuation of the lower courses of this wall.
